Groundwork NI
Grow Your Own

Thu 24th June 2010, Ards Allotments, 100 Comber Road, Belfast, BT23 4QS

Following on from the successful Grow Our Own seminar series, Groundwork NI are delighted to announce two training sessions for people who are keen to grow their own fruit and vegetables at home or to take on an allotment.

The number of sheer delights that you can’t buy but only relish when you have your own garden or allotment is countless. During this course you will learn the basics of growing vegetables at home or on an allotment. It is the beginner’s guide for growing your own and a must for anyone who wants to engage with their soil, their garden and the Earth.

This hands on workshop, is facilitated by Maurice Patton (Ards Allotments) who has over twenty years experience of farming and community gardening. Both workshop sessions will focus on the following core elements:

Securing the site and planning your plot
Water access and drainage
Soils types
Building fertility in the plot
Demonstration of digging techniques inc double digging
Sowing and transplanting
Composting and managing a wormery

Participants who attend will each receive a 35-page handout How to grow Vegetables and Herbs and take away a planted recycled container with lettuce plants so you can start your very own garden when you return home.

Thanks to support from the Department of Social Development this training is completely subsidised and there are no costs for individuals/groups who wish to attend this training seminar. A healthy lunch will be served and please note that transportation will not be provided to the allotment. We would advise that you wear appropriate clothing and footwear, all other materials will be provided by Groundwork NI and Ards Allotments.

Places are limited and we would strongly recommend booking early to avoid any disappointment
